El Salvador

On Jan. 14, I set out for El Salvador. I didn't know much about the country but was eager to discover new things and to learn more spanish. I had never been on such an intense trip before and the only place I had traveled to out of the U.S. was when I took a cruise to the Bahamas. To add to the experience, it was also my first time, EVER, on an airplane. I remember looking up at airplanes, wondering what it must be like to be in one... I will admit that my stomach felt a little twisted when the plane took off, but once we were up in the air and the plane was steady, I felt amazing! I also had the good fortune to have a seat next to the window on all four flights I took. The whole idea of planes amazes me. We get on this giant machine, sit down in a comfortable seat, fly up into the air so high that you are above the clouds, and arrive to your destination in record time. I could not believe how fast the flights were! From Atlanta to El Salvador was about 3 hours. 3 HOURS. I could be sitting at home on the computer for 3 hours, or cleaning the house for 3 hours, or I could be taking a plane across the ocean that is headed for El Salvador for 3 hours.... it's incredible. When we arrived at the airport in El Salvador, I couldn't believe the warm air that greeted me! It is currently 10 degrees here in North Carolina and 90 degrees in El Salvador. That is a huge difference. El Salvador only has two seasons, the dry season (November to April), and the rainy season (May to October). The weather is also very constant, with little drastic changes. The whole time we were there the sky was nearly cloudless and the temperature ranged from about 85 degrees to 90 degrees. The only strangely cold place we went to was a small town called Ataco, where I was shivering during the later hours of the day. Though the landscape and weather was beautiful, what really touched me was the people. I met with so many different people with so many different lifestyles. It makes you realize how small you are, and how you share this planet with so many different people. But at the same time, it makes you realize that we are all connected; what we do truly affects other's lives, wether it be big or small. Simply talking to someone makes you a part of their life, a piece of their history. I also realized how many generous, nice people live in this world. Every single person I talked to wanted to help me in some way. Many were eager to help me with my spanish and did not ridicule me if I said something wrong, which helped build my confidence and fuel my desire to learn. I was amazed how many open-minded, accepting people lived there. I wish more people were like that in this world. Now that I'm home, I want to go back so badly. I feel trapped in the old routine of worrying about school and passing tests. I have realized that I am free-spirited at heart and want to live a life of travel and discovery. I don't want to stay in one place doing the same things over and over, which is exactly what I am doing right now... Luckily, I have been invited to stay with an amazing couple in June and July who have a gorgeous house in El Salvador. This is a perfect example of how generous the people are there. They invited me to stay in their home free of charge and attend spanish classes at the university where one of them works. I miss all the people I met while there and can't wait to see them all again! My heart belongs to El Salvador and I will be counting down the days until June arrives and I get to see this beautiful country full of beautiful people once more. I encourage all you travelers out there to visit El Salvador! You will be surprised how accepted you are by the people and how beautiful the country is as a whole.

There a few extra things I would like to address. Firstly, I know that El Salvador is known for having very dangerous gangs, violence, and crime. I was very nervous about going because of this and wasn't sure wether or not I would be safe. To my surprise, I felt completely safe the entire time. I saw no gang members, who are notorious for having many tattoos to represent their gang, and I saw no violence whatsoever. There were many armed guards with rifles across their chest as well but I did not see any of them actually use their weapons. Secondly, there is no denying that there is also a lot of poverty in El Salvador. You are going to see it no matter what. El Salvador is a third world country after all. What was surprising to me is despite their poverty stricken life, many of the people seemed generally happy and thankful for the life they had.

The beautiful trees and plants that grow in Cerro Verde, which was one of my favorite places we visited.

I couldn't help but do a few silhouette shots while in Costa Del Sol!

This is a gorgeous canopy of flowers that I saw in Ataco.

Coffee in El Salvador is HUGE. There were coffee plants everywhere and it struck me as incredible how much they look like simple berries. Before, I would have never known this plant had coffee beans inside of it.

This was perhaps the most delicate, beautiful flower I have ever seen. When I showed this to my little sister, she told me it looked like a fairy.

This is the beach in El Zonte. It was gorgeous there and everyone was extremely kind!

These are Morros, a type of gourd that people have cut in half and used as cups for hundreds of years.

This is a cashew plant! It is very odd looking and the cashews are connected to a fruit.

Healthy Living

I am writing this to share with you my new found love for delicious, healthy food. I have become very interested in health and nutrition this past year and wanted to share my knowledge! First of all, I want to emphasize that in order to eat healthy, you don't have to sacrifice taste. It's incredible how many foods taste absolutely delicious and are also good for you. What I mean by "good for you" is that the food you eat has nutritional value and benefits your body in some way. For example, spinach, a leafy green, is filled with vitamins A, K, D, and E. Other than the abundance of vitamins, spinach also contains anti-inflammitory antioxidants and is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. All these components of spinach benefit your body in some way or another. On the other hand, foods such as candy, ice cream, or anything processed, have little to no nutritional value. You can indulge on these items, of course, but you should not base your diet around them. I encourage you to base it around foods from the earth, like fruits and vegetables. I also encourage you to eat lots of healthy proteins, like salmon (or practically any other type of fish), eggs, beans, and soy. Avoid getting your protein through unhealthy food like bacon, hot dogs, etc...

Things I eat on a regular basis to stay healthy:

  • Smoothies
Smoothies are absolutely fantastic nutritionally, if done right. Making a smoothie is a quick and easy way to load up on nutrients to energize and replenish your body. You can practically add any fruit or vegetable to your smoothie, which are all beneficial in their own way, to make sure your body is getting vitamins and nutrients. Some form of liquid needs to be added in order to make a smoothie. I like to put tea in my smoothies, experimenting with different flavors. I don't recommend using liquids such as milk or juice because they add unwanted extra calories and juice is often loaded with sugar. Other, better options, include soy milk, tea of any flavor (unsweetened, of course), coconut water, or just plain water. Other ingredients that can be added to smoothies to boost their nutritional value include flax seeds, goji berries,  chia seeds, any type of nut, and hemp seeds. All these items need to be ground in order for your body to properly absorb their nutrients. You can buy most of these items already ground at the store or you can do it yourself with a coffee grinder, which is what I do.

My favorite smoothie recipe

Fruity - My fruity smoothie is my favorite and what I drink almost everyday. It gives me an energy boost and leaves me feeling healthy and happy. I also feel good knowing that not only is my smoothie delicious, but it is also helping my body.

What you need:

  • half an avocado
  • 1 1/4 cup green tea
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries
  • half a kiwi
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1 frozen banana
  • tsp ground flax seed
  • tsp ground goji berries
  • tsp chia seeds ( the chia seeds don't necessarily need to be ground because they expand it water, however, they can also be ground if preferred. )
  • Sweetener to taste ( I sometimes put a little pure maple syrup to enhance the flavors but any sweetener can be used.  This smoothie can also be made without any sweetener. It's a matter of personal preference. )
Simply put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth!

You can experiment with the ingredients of course. I prefer my smoothies thick so I can have it with a spoon, but if you want it thinner simply add more green tea.

Beauty in the Snow

My little sister is so funny. She almost always refuses to model for my photographs and I always try to convince her to. Yesterday, I asked her a few times but she said no every time until I mentioned that I would put makeup on her. She looked at me for a few seconds before saying, "Okay!". I was completely surprised at her response! She was so excited about the makeup that she got dressed and ready to go out as quickly as she could. I put on eye shadow, mascara, and even curled her eyelashes, which was her favorite part. Then, we found some sparkles that I rubbed on her eyelids and around her eyes. It had just snowed and was utterly frigid, but we went out anyway. I took pictures until my fingers felt numb. When we came back inside, I asked her if she wanted me to wash her makeup off and she said no, she liked having it on. It was fun.  She is already extremely beautiful, but the makeup enhanced her beauty even more. Looking at her face like this makes me imagine her as older, and how she will look then. I wonder how she will look when she is my age.. She is only 9 years old now, but I realize that before I know it she will grow into a young women. I can tell that she is obsessed with the idea of being older, hence the excitement over the makeup. It's funny how we always want something until we have it.. I remember wanting to be a teenager and now that I am one, I don't feel any more special. In fact, I envy the simplicity of being younger.

About Me

About Me

My name is Noelle Buske, I am currently sixteen years old, and have a love of photography. It all began when I started taking pictures with my mother's nikon d40 about three or four years ago. It wasn't anything great then, just a bunch of pictures of flowers, leaves, and a whole lot of self-portraits I took in my yard. What began as something I did when I had nothing better to do, soon became one of my biggest passions. What really inspired me was the work of others; I would stare in awe at all the beautiful talent I discovered on Flickr. It was all so inspiring... it is still so inspiring. Artists like Nirrimi Joy Firebrace and Anastasia Volkova would leave me breathless. Their work is phenomenal and, every time I look at it, pushes me to improve my own skills.

To this day, I still take pictures with that same Nikon d40 that I first discovered photography with. I one day hope to purchase a canon eos 5d mark ii (my dream camera) or, more practically, a canon eos 60d.  Sometimes I wish I had all the money in the world and could expand my creative resources but, unfortunetaly, life doesn't always work like that. In fact, it rarely does. I am thankful for what I have now and know that it is not just the camera, but also the artist that makes a beautiful photograph.

My biggest love is photography but I also like to paint, draw, and sing. Painting and drawing, to me, are like photography in that the positioning of objects creates the desired composition. I also have a love for colors and painting literally gives you endless possibilities in color combinations. Since I can remember, I have also loved to sing. I usually sing only around my home and almost never sing to others. I hope to one day overcome this fear and really let myself go by singing to people. But for today, I will stick to singing in the shower and in my living room. Another thing that I truly love to do is relax. I get great joy out of simply sitting at my kitchen table with a warm cup of coffee and a few magazines spread out before me. Sometimes, when I'm alone and relaxing, I feel my happiest and most content. I do like to be with people, but only my family and a few friends. I honestly do not like to be around lots of people and end up feeling very claustrophobic and uncomfortable. I once went to a Sara Bareilles concert and, though Sara is one of my favorite singers, did not enjoy myself at all because of how many people were there. Everyone was standing very close together and it was very hot. I much rather listen to Sara Bareilles's music while painting or cooking in the comfort of my own home.

A large part of my life right now is spanish. I am fascinated my other languages and have been studying spanish for sometime now. My goal is to be able to fluently speak it and travel to spanish speaking countries to discover new cultures and experience new things. I have such a strong desire to travel! I don't want to be a person who stays in one place and excludes the endless possibilities and beauty of the rest of the world. I feel that, in order to truly live life to the fullest, you must be open-minded and observe and experience new things. Life is so full of possibilities that can lead you to amazing places, if you let it.
